We are adding a new flavour to Cooking the Books – ICONS!

Over the past few decades, there have been some cookbooks that stand out from the rest, either by perfectly capturing the time they were written, catapulting their author to culinary stardom, or helping UK cuisine to develop and grow in new and interesting ways.

This year, we are adding a selection of these truly iconic books to our Cooking the Books programme, and our Head Tutor/Owner Gilly will be showing you how to cook classic recipes from their pages, while discussing what made these books  – and chefs – such game-changers.

Come along and learn how to add some classic dishes from iconic recipe books to your repertoire.  It’s informal, it’s fun, and you might come away with a new perspective on UK cuisine – all in one memorable evening!

July's Book: Yorkshire Breakfasts by Rosemary Shrager

This promises to be a special book share, with Gilly being the right hand woman to Rosemary for many years when they worked together at Swinton Estate's cookery school! This recipe book has been a favourite of Gilly's for many a year as the recipes are local and celebrate the amazing produce on our doorstep.

Rosemary wanted to write this book as she believed we are stuck in a rut with this meal that is meant to set us up for the day, and it certainly guarantees to broaden your breakfast horizons, as well as be an appetising read. You'll find classics in there, as well as new recipes for the culinary curious. The recipes show Rosemary's versatility as a chef, and Gilly will choose her favourites to share with you on the evening.

At the start of the book, Rosemary writes: “This book is dedicated to any time of the day”, and goes on the make the point that a great breakfast can make an equally great lunch or supper. Hence the chapters on brunch, special occasions, and indulgence!

Expect a night filled with fantastic food, and stories from Gilly's very own food hero.
